Xavi, the Al Sadd coach, and the Barcelona legend has shown support for Qatar and believes that Qatar can make a great impression at the World Cup following the event of Akram Afif being named as the year’s best Asian player only yesterday.
Xavi, based in Doha has collected the award on behalf of Afif at the Asian Football Confederation award program hosted in Hong Kong. He said that the Qataris are sure to be competitive for World Cup 2022.
Saki Kumagai from Japan had been rewarded for her glittering career for his country, as well as the club as she had named as the player of the year in the women’s category at the ceremony. Afif who is 23 years old has created a record of 10 assists with Qatar storming to the 1st title for the Asian Cup in the month of February. He reaped the reward of great investment in the national setup as the World Cup comes closer.
Afif has helped Al Sadd of Xavi to reach the semi-finals of AFC Champions League where they had lost the match to Al Hilal, the Saudi eventual winners 6-5 on aggregate. Xavi had won the World Cup 2010 and said about Qatar that they are working really well and they are standing against some of the biggest countries. He said that they have a good team and a good coach. They play in a well-organized manner on the pitch as they have a pretty good generation of players who can bring about a difference on file. According to him, they are working pretty well and are capable of competing in the World Cup 2022.
Afif is the second consecutive player from Qatar to have won the prize for men after Abdelkarim Hassan, the defender from last year.
