Vermaelen eyes Premier League return

Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen might make a return to the Premier League with both Liverpool and West Ham interested in signing the Belgium international. The player has been disillusioned with a lack of first-team football at Barcelona and might consider a move away from the Spanish side.

Thomas Vermaelen has joined Barcelona in 2014 after leaving the Gunners but so far has only managed to make 14 appearances for the Spanish side. If he goes, he will be the second defender that will be leaving Barcelona after Marc Bartra. The latter has just left Barcelona to join German side Borussia Dortmund.

West Ham, who is currently strengthening their team, are in the market for a new defender and will believe that Vermaelen will make a great addition to their team. Indeed, with Dimitri Payet being irresistible in the attack, the West Ham coach Slaven Bilic will be looking to strengthen his defence to ensure that his side does not concede easy goals. Thomas Vermaelen has a lot of Premier League and Champions League experience that will definitely help in improving the West Ham defence.

It is also reported that Liverpool might also be interested in signing the Barcelona defender. Just as West Ham, Liverpool are also looking for a new defender. So far they have already signed Joel Matip from Schalke, but they will feel that they need at least one more player at the back to ensure that they can compete a whole season.

However, it is believed that the Belgium international favors London and may opt to sign for West Ham. Thomas Vermaelen is currently in France with the Belgium national side, and we will have to wait for the end of the Euro 2016 to find out if he will leave Barcelona or not.
